Osasuna Calls 22 Players for Season Finale Against Getafe
Los Rojillos headed to the locker room with the lead thanks to Jon Moncayola and own-goal, but Beñat Turrientes and Igor Zubeldia forced the match into extra time. In the penalties the Txuriurdin won the match 4-3.
Osasuna was eliminated from the Copa del Rey after falling 4-3 in a penalty shootout to Real Sociedad following a 2-2 draw in regulation Tuesday night at Anoeta Stadium. Midfielder Jon Moncayola scored early and a forward Mikel Oyarzabal own goal put Los Rojillos in front, but Real Sociedad forced extra time with second-half goals from midfielders Beñat Turrientes and Igor Zubeldia. The Basque club prevailed in the shootout to advance.
Osasuna struck first just four minutes in, when Moncayola volleyed in from the edge of the box past goalkeeper Unai Marrero. In the 17th minute, Moncayola delivered a dangerous corner that Real Sociedad forward Oyarzabal inadvertently turned into his own net, doubling the visitors' lead. Real Sociedad pressed for a response but Osasuna's defense kept them at bay. Near halftime, defender Duje Caleta-Car nearly pulled one back for the hosts, but failed to connect with a cross to the far post. Midfielder Carlos Soler later sent a shot wide.
Forward Raúl García nearly extended Osasuna’s lead early in the second half with a shot from 18 yards that Marrero tipped over the bar. The visitors held firm until the 75th minute, when Turrientes put Real Sociedad on the board after a foul on Osasuna’s midfielder Rubén García went uncalled by referee César Soto Grado. Two minutes later, defender Javi Galán set up Raúl for another chance, but Marrero made the save. In stoppage time, Zubeldia equalized with a right-footed shot from inside the box.
In extra time, forward Ante Budimir’s header rattled the crossbar. In the 106th minute, Soto Grado awarded Real Sociedad a penalty after a video review, but Oyarzabal’s attempt was saved by Osasuna goalkeeper Aitor Fernández. Fernández made two more crucial saves in the 115th minute, denying midfielder Takefusa Kubo’s shot and defender Jon Martín’s header.
After 120 minutes, the match was decided by penalties. Real Sociedad converted their first four attempts, while Osasuna missed their second but scored their first, third and fourth. In the final round, midfielder Arsen Zakharian fired over the bar and Marrero saved defender Alejandro Catena’s effort to secure Real Sociedad’s place in the next round.
Osasuna will face Real Oviedo on Saturday, Jan. 17, at El Sadar. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CET (5:30 p.m. GMT, 12:30 p.m. ET).
Minutes: 121min.
